“You all look really healthy and fit, thank you for serving vegetables, and we desperately need it to stay healthy,” said one pilot. This program not only aims to make the members of the military to stay slim, but it has been a government program that has been budgeted.
About a quarter of U.S. military personnel are overweight. Department of Defense has spent 1.1 million dollars a year for their medical care due to being overweight and obese.
Military Health System’s New Obesity and Nutrition has been campaigning for the dangers of obesity, and greater emphasis on awareness of the importance of eating fruits, vegetables, grains and foods low in fat. Food will be served by food service to all members of the U.S. military.
Mrs. Obama is the leader of the campaign against obesity in the military and this program will emphasize to all members of the military in other countries. “We’ll have to make healthy food a priority in life,” said one pilot.
Given this new program, each of the armed forces will be asked to update the standard menu the first time after 20 years to ensure healthy food menu choices. Based on a survey conducted mid-1990 found that about 1 out of 50 military members have a weight problem.
Dr. Jonathan Woodson, assistant defense minister for health said, “We intend to focus on preventable diseases to help our people become healthier after undergoing medical treatment at clinics or hospitals.”
